The WATERKANT Berlin is picking up speed. By 2025, a new quarter with around 2,500 residential units will be built directly on the waterfront. Playgrounds, day care centre, bakery, flower shop, pharmacies, cosmetics, gastronomic facilities, supermarket and a wide range of leisure activities included. This ensures neighbourly encounters and turns houses with apartments into a living district. In the summer of 2018, construction work began on the first 362 apartments directly on the eastern bank of the Havel between Spandauer Seebrücke and Wasserstadtbrücke.

City Development Senator Katrin Lompscher (Linke) and Spandau Mayor Helmut Kleebank (SPD) were present to launch the construction of the new Berlin neighborhood with its riverside promenade. From mid-2020, 362 affordable 1- to 4-room apartments, 9 commercial units and 95 parking spaces will be built here. 120 apartments will be subsidised and subject to occupancy commitment.

In the west, the buildings border the waterfront promenade with direct access to the Havel. The meeting place for the first subproject is the new town square northwest of the site with a staircase leading to the water. The start of the second construction phase with approximately 460 apartments is planned for 2019. In total, there are three subprojects divided into several construction phases. A community centre is planned for all subprojects as well as for neighbours. (South of the first construction phase behind the Spandauer Seebrücke is the WBM construction phase, in which 364 more affordable rented apartments will be built by 2021.)

With a total of around 2,500 new rental apartments, WATERKANT Berlin will become an innovative quarter with a high quality of life for people with different life plans. For families, the new neighbourhood offers affordable apartments with children’s rooms near the day care centre and playgrounds in Berlin Spandau. New and established Berliners will also find single apartments at fair rents in prime waterfront locations.

Sustainability and social compatability as a priority for future-oriented living in the best waterfront location

WATERKANT Berlin has received the DGNB pre-certificate in platinum for its sustainable energy concept, the innovative mobility offers and the expansion of the social infrastructure in Berlin Spandau, among other things. This is the highest possible certification level. The quality of the residential concept as well as the quality of the entire construction process was evaluated. The following aspects for sustainable building were evaluated and divided into six subject areas: ecology, economy, socio-cultural and functional aspects, technology, processes and location.

The WATERKANT Berlin quarter achieved outstanding results in all areas, with a focus on energy, mobility and participation.
